MBAs - Life, liberty & pursuit of yuppieness

Jivha - the Tongue: MBAs - Life, liberty & pursuit of yuppieness: "In 1944, C.S. Lewis delivered a speech titled 'The Inner Ring' to the graduating class of Kings College at the University of London. He asserted that the strongest of all drives is the desire to belong to an 'inner ring' - an imaginary circle of the important. But, he warned, status is like an onion comprising endless layers. No sooner do you crack one ring than you become obsessed with getting to the even-more-exclusive ring inside that one."

  • Neat post..

In the strictest tradition of gratuitously commenting on somethings as neat and complete as the original article, I feel strongly that while it already must be resonating very clearly for the people who might have actually gone through the MBAs and the rites of waking up to questioning themselves about the worth of thinking up strategies for selling 100 cases more of liquor, it has eerie parallels for all 'career professionals' being churned out by our 'unbeatable education' system.

    Things we do!

  • One nice day, thousands of years ago, a man must have woken up a little hungry, gotten out of his cave, seen the sun rise up past the mountain on the horizon. For a strange, inexplicable reason, he must have started walking in that direction, and upon reaching the mountain, he must have scaled it. His succeeding generations must have done something quite similar, and thus over thousands of years - man originated in Africa but spread out to inhabit most of the earth.
Why did he do it? Because it was the next thing to do. There is no logic or reason for such actions - only the fact that "it is the next thing to do".

The progress of humanity is based on this illogical drive to the next thing to do. To quote George Mallory's immortal words on why he wanted to climb the Everest - "because it is there".

To many, the pursuit of yuppiness and an MBA is in the same vein - it is simply the next thing to do, the next mountain to climb. Searching for reason or logic to such actions is bound to fail.
